Race Report: Buttonwillow, June 2005

The long awaited report and pics from Buttonwillow:

We hadn't done well in the last couple of races especially at Willow Springs, so we had to step it up a little. We cut down the wing from each side and looks a little funky now, but whatever works.

We also put in some spherical bearings for the raduis rods which should help keep the car straight under breaking. We got to the track unloaded, and got the car ready for Practice at 8am. We decided to try 91 octane instead of the 100 since its much cheaper. I took the advice of Bernardo by changing the camber, toe, and tire pressure settings, and hoped for faster lap times.

Practice was good, even though there were alot of cars on the field including the USTCC and enduro drivers. Had the fastest lap in practice with a 2:14, but Practice usually doesn't predict anything. We changed the 225/50/14 Borbets to the 225/45/15 Kosei's.

Then it was qualifying time, not much room to get a fast lap, but I managed to put down a 2:13.4 which was fastest in qualfying out of 10 H4 cars. Rick Hohwart qualified in 2nd with 2:14.3 and Steve Ellsworth with 2:15.3.

I started in front of the Z in PSO and behind the Baby Grand.

At the start, Steve passed Rick for second place and I followed the Baby Grand. The Z passed me in the first lap and Steve caught up to me and tried to pass in the last turn and we went side by side onto the straight and through the first turn and then I pulled ahead as we went into the esses.

Then I drove with caution and kept the lead to finish the race in 1st!!

Steve finished in second not far behind and Rick in third, who was having some problems with vtec.

We didn't stay to watch the enduro, but went to eat, then went to the hotel and slept from like 8pm to about 6am. Very tiring but successful day.

On Sunday, I didn't go out to the practice session because we were making sure everything was in its place from yesterday. Sundays qualifying was interesting because the directors made it into a Qualifying race. The grid was reverse order from Sundays
. Good thing they put me in the back of H4 and not behind the 28 other cars.

In qualifying,

I worked my way up to fifth place in the first lap. Steve got up to first place with Miguel Escobar behind him and Rick and John McNulty in front of me.

Then I worked my way up to Steve, who was in first, passing John, Rick, and Miguel.

While following Steve I set a faster lap of 2:11.6. We got to some traffic and Steve passed one of the USTCC mini coopers and I was left behind it before the turn. Steve qualified 1st with me 2nd and Rick third. The qualifying race was very exciting and I was content with my qualifying position. We bled the brakes and made sure everything was in place for the race.

Ready on the Grid:

Green Flag:

In the first turn of the race I managed to get by Steve for first place. Steve was following very close and driving hard as he spun right before the busstop.

He managed to get back on the track into fourth place behind Rick and Miguel, then he was able to get by Miguel. Rick spun and had to exit since the car was vibrating alot. I finished in 1st with Steve in second and Miguel in 3rd.
Results:

All in all a great weekend. We came up with 2 great first places and no damage.

I'd like to thank Bernardo for the tips.
