Race Report: Buttonwillow Race Park, April 2006

This was one of the biggest races of the year since the Norcal Honda Challenge drivers came down for the crossover. A total of 23 H4 cars showed up for Saturday’s race, which is the biggest H4 field in HC history so far. Since there were 32 HC cars, we were given our own group with the SE-R’s.

We hadn’t won a crossover race since 2004 in Buttonwillow so we were determined to do much better than we did last year at Infineon and BW. We designed a new front splitter for this race to help us in the cornering and we also installed the prototype sway bar thanks to A-Spec Racing.

Saturday:

Edik was the fastest in qualifying with a 2:03.037, 3/10ths faster than the record, held by him. Rick and Jeremy came out of the warm-up session with 2:05’s. In qualifying, Edik and Jeremy didn’t get much room to put down a fast lap. Donna Gillio, in a baby blue DA, qualified 1st with Edik in 2nd and Rick in 3rd. At the drop of the green flag, Donna powered her way in front of Edik with Jeremy in right behind. Jeremy was also able to get by Edik in the first couple of turns. After a few laps had gone by, Edik made a move on Jeremy and took back his starting position. Edik sat behind Donna and waited until it was the right time to make a move. Edik came out of the Buttonhook faster than her and got in front of her before braking into Cotton Corners. Edik made the first turn, but was hit from behind by Donna in transition to the second turn. Edik was forced off and had to go through the forest that was created due to all the rain. He made it back on track, but unfortunately with a severely damaged splitter and a rear bumper hanging on to dear life. The next lap, the crowd cheered as Jeremy passed Donna and took the lead. Jeremy never looked back as he took the checkered flag. Edik drove very hard to catch up. While doing so, he broke his own track record by a tenth of a second. He cut the distance between him and Donna by more than half, but the Checkered flag dropped before he could get closer. Donna was later disqualified because of the hit. Edik  finished in 2nd with Sam in 3rd.

Sunday:

We reattached the bumper and replaced the splitter with our previous version and were ready to go on Sunday. Edik qualified on pole with a 2:02.9 with Donna in second and Jeremy in third. Sunday’s start was pretty exciting since it was a standing start. Edik pulled out ahead on the launch but couldn’t get the car into the next gear. At that point Donna and Jeremy passed Edik before turn 1.Edik Got by Jeremy when he went wide and hit dirt into Lost Hill. He got by Donna by outbraking her into the last corner before the straightway to take the lead. He pulled away and kept his lead to finish 1st in class and 2nd overall behind Andrie Hartanto in H1. Donna and Jeremy had contact through the Esses which left Jeremy with tire rubbing issues. Donna finished in 2nd and Jeremy in 3rd.

It was a pretty good weekend for us as we defended our turf and finished 2nd on Saturday

and 1st on Sunday.

It was still a sad weekend when  Dan Lawson driving a FFR rolled. Our condolences go out to Dan Lawson’s family and friends.

I'd like to thank our sponsors for helping us get out to the race track.
